There’s no lie that flower prices have skyrocketed within the last few years, much like everything else in our lives. In comparison to pre-covid, flowers have skyrocketed as much as 30%! Having been in the industry for only 3-4 years – starting mid Covid – I have already seen a jump within these years myself. To put it simply, it’s nuts. And gone are the days of lavish wedding florals for a steal.
So, let’s break down a quote and see exactly what it includes, and why. If there’s one thing I can pass onto my clients, it’s that they feel well-informed, and can book their flowers with peace of mind without there being any surprises down the line! It’s so important to me as a business owner to be as transparent as possible well ahead of time about my fees / cost to hire me as your designer. Clarity is everything!
If you want to spend 4k on flowers, this does not mean your final total is 4k. Like getting a home built, there is the luxury cost of goods, but then you need to also budget for the labour and installation costs to make it happen from the qualified workers who have years of experience!
To ensure we are on the same page, a quote is broken down in a few factors:
1. Flowers
This is the cost of the luxury good. My minimum investment for a full-service floral spend is $4000. This is the cost for the flowers alone.
2. Labour
This is 25% of the overall cost of goods is allocated for the design fee / labour. This is to cover for my labour to create, execute and plan the designs. This compensates for the thoughtful planning, processing the flowers the week of the wedding, curation of design + executing a dream vision. You can read my blog ‘Labour – What is It?’ which explains what exactly the labour line includes.
3. Delivery
This is charged at a flat rate of $100 or $200, + 90c/km from my studio to your getting ready locations & venue, to accommodate for insurance, fuel, wear and tear of the vehicle and travel.
4. Bump in
This is the on the day set up of your florals. The bump in is charged per hour/per person, and this is to accommodate for the time spent onsite delivering and installing the designs. A freestanding arch may take 4 hours, with 3 florists onsite, whereas placing grounded meadows and a few bud jars may only take 2 hours for 1 florist.
There is also an automatic line added for weddings with a large flower spend or for designs which are laborious, and this is Freelancers. This allocation is for the invaluable contribution of designers, who are needed to successfully complete your vision within a short time frame. This is priced at a % of the labour, to be representative of the size of the work and number of freelancers needed. When it comes to wedding work, it really takes a village, and I only have 2 hands! Most of the gorgeous designs you see can’t physically be done by 1 person, and freelancers are truly the backbone to the flower industry. When you receive a custom quote from us at Bee’s Blossoms, all of these factors are included and are bespoke, meaning your quote will already have the delivery fee based on your wedding location, the bump in will be reflective for how long the set up should take etc. We do it this way, so each couple have a very clear understanding of the cost of each item and charge, to ensure complete transparency and no hidden costs later.
To clarify:
- 1. The flower spend is what you are going to spend on flowers.
- 2. The labour is to hire us to bring it to life.
- 3. The delivery fee is the ‘call out’ fee to deliver your goods.
- 4. The bump in is the on the day man labour to set it all up/take it down.
I have always found the best way to communicate with my clients + potential clients are how I communicate in everyday life: honestly, clearly and simply! Weddings can be so overwhelming and stressful to plan, but this can seriously be alleviated when you have vendors who are experienced, reputable honest and clear, and most importantly, bloody good at what they do!
So, if you’re envisioning a floral wonderland for your wedding, remember that the price isn’t just for the flowers/product. It’s for the creativity, labour, experience and planning that’s involved to transform those blooms into the magical setting you’ll remember forever. And we here to make that happen, transparently, and with so much dang love!
Here’s a flower quote I’m loving lately: “If you tend to a flower, it will bloom, no matter how many weeds surround it” — Matshona Dhliwayo
